Dick Frizzell

Dick Frizzell MNZM is widely regarded as one of New Zealand's most influential contemporary artists. Across more than five decades, he has continually reinvented his practice, producing paintings, prints and drawings that combine humour, technical brilliance and an unmistakable New Zealand voice. Moving effortlessly between landscape, popular culture, art history and everyday Kiwi life, Frizzell's work blurs the boundaries between high art and popular imagery. His paintings often appear playful on first encounter, yet beneath the wit lies a thoughtful exploration of identity, memory and the images that shape New Zealand culture.

Originally trained at the Ilam School of Fine Arts before establishing a successful career in advertising, Frizzell became a full-time painter in 1995. Since then he has exhibited extensively throughout New Zealand, represented the country internationally, completed an Antarctic residency, created official artwork for the Rugby World Cup and published several acclaimed books on art and creativity. His work is held in the permanent collections of Te Papa Tongarewa, Auckland Art Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery and numerous important private collections. More than sixty years after beginning his artistic career, Frizzell continues to produce ambitious new work that remains as inventive, relevant and distinctly New Zealand as ever.
