Don Ramage
Born Napier 1923, Died 2009. Educated Napier Boys High School , Victoria University and Wellington Art School , studied painting and environmental design at the Instituto d'Arte in Florence ; Member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers ( London ); Winner of 1960 Wellington Festival Carpet Design competition, together with the Printed Wool Fabric Design competition and the Graphic Art competition.
Ramage‘s interest in plate lithography evolved during the 1950's. It grew largely from a liking for the problem solving and intensive planning involved in publicity and theatre design, and from a deep delight in the use of colour.
In his lithography the use of grained zinc and aluminium plates rather than the traditional lithographic stone was something of a departure from the fine arts tradition in this country.
“The challenge of printmaking,” Ramage says, “is typically a design one: a matter of working out a personal problem of visual expression and then realising it in a concrete form, in the most complete and effective way.” Don was a visionary, predicting the industralisation in the 60s would have impact on the environment in the future, for example his series 'Construction' then 'Steel Jungle' then 'Flight of the Birds'. |
